This is a question thats been raging online ever since Google said in September 2009, that blog meta description is not a ranking factor.

But that was way back in 2009.

Presently, Writing a good blog description is very highly important…

I striked the ‘very’ cause its not just very important.. but highly important.

Its a necessity…especially for getting targeted traffic from Search Engines.

It has pretty much been clarified by several sources that a meta description will not directly affect your website ranking in the Google search results…

though we highly recommend writing well optimized blog post descriptions.

To be sure, i need to check the blog post description.

Description says ‘Learning how to write a blog post that people will actually want to read… ‘

Reading through that.. The description perfect cause it describes just what i’m searching for.

Definitely that’s a call to go ahead and click…

But! Let me ask you?

How long should your Blog Meta Description be?

It’s recommended you know how long a blog description should be.

Far back in December 2017, how long your meta description should be wasn’t necessary.

No one cared if his blog post description length was 500 words long or 350.

Until Google announced the official meta description length of 320 words.

And that was far back in 2017.

SEO’s took it seriously when most of their meta descriptions started cutting short on google search.

They started re-optimizing their contents to 350 words.

This is to show that the length of your meta description should not be joked with.

Yoast SEO, a popular seo wordpress plugin says that

The idea length of your blog description should be up to 155 characters.. if not more

That’s a metric Yoast Seo follows..

Around May Google made changes to the description length..

They increased it to 160 words.

Fact is the final official length hasn’t been talked yet.. it’s just experimenting to know what fits.

No one knows the official length but id advise you strive to keep your meta description to a 160 characters.

Character count has been a survival game when writing a blog description.

Blog writers just keep writing.. focusing to hit some random numbers…

And count on Google to perform magic to rank them up above competitors.

Google has been playing around with ‘the exact length of a post description’.

If you didn’t keep up with the xxx number, you’d end up frustrated picturing the exact character count per each description.

I’ve noticed that i don’t usually write great description if i played by the ‘character count’ game.

It’s just my experience.. but when i talked to a few others, they complained similar too.

I then decided to try writing up at normal trend (No fixed word count but a meaningful summary) and i noticed it did amazingly well.

The result had a significant difference.

And it made me understand that what’s really important is ‘striking emotions’

If you must go for a character count, shoot for 150- 200 description number count.


Tip #2: Play around with Power Words

Recent study from smartblogger shows that power words are persuasive, emotional words that trigger a positive or negative response.

They are killer words, you can use to attract google searchers.

Words like;

Tip #3: Work with Keywords

Meta Description doesn’t have great impact on ranking… That’s right

But having a keyword or phrase round your blog description could have significant to your search results.

You ever made a search on google and when results comes up, you find bits of keywords you just searched been highlighted?
